Are you creating a positive atmosphere in your interviews? I have been telling candidates for years how to present the skills they do have, instead of what they don't have. Here's how it usually goes in a work interview.

Interviewer: Do you have any experience in X?

Candidate: Not really!

Interviewer: Tell me about the experience you DO HAVE.

Candidate: Well not much really. I didn't have an official title. And it was also in another country so I don't think it really counts.

These kind of answers frustrate interviewers and can sometimes come across as evasive. A much better way to answer is like this: "Yes, I have 4 years experience with Y which is very similar to X. I am familiar with X and I have used it for 4 months. I understand all the features of X thoroughly.

I was caught out making this mistake myself recently, in a social setting, with some people my wife was working with, on an interesting and successful project:

A person pretended a vegetable stick was a microphone and went around interviewing the people at the gathering. I was the first to be interviewed and I really appreciated being corrected.
Person: (holding the microphone up to me) Chris, tell me what you did on this project.
Chris: Well I really didn't do anything, this was my wife's project and I am just here for the social gathering.
Person: (Joyfully) Hey Chris, none of this "not really ....I am just here..". "It should be - I am excited about the project and I supported my wife 100%".

The modified statement was absolutely true and I had missed a chance to lift everyone's spirits. What a difference this approach makes! It is life changing!
