Peer pressure is a powerful influence, especially when repeated as fact from multiple sources. There is no substitute for knowing where you are going and how things work, but even this is not enough. Knowledge and understanding have to be put into action accurately and with patience. In many cases, time is required to get results.
Employers first want to know each candidate's level of experience so they can qualify and compare them. However, popular trends in resume presentation promote the use of flowery language and have sidelined the presentation of experience.
For example, I receive resumes daily from people who promote subjective qualities but don't clearly indicate what role titles are appropriate for them and the level of experience that qualifies them for those roles.
My experience over 20 years with thousands of resumes and submissions indicates that the first method is far more effective. However, most people use the second method. Why is this?
